THE MEANING

I look at myself.

The skull stares out from the thorns. His skull. The lamb who I killed. Vines grope from the sockets like the tentacles of some eldritch abomination. Slow. Inevitable. They curl around my legs. My throat.

The shame is killing me . . .

. . . as it should have long ago.

"No!" they caw. "You're forgiven!" But do they even know forgiveness? Are we not allowed our redemption arc? There is a time for finally realizing the full weight of what we have done.

I look at Jesus. Hanging there. Pierced for my guilt. And I see myself in his tortured body.

Tears come to my eyes as it finally clicks. The weight of this love has made me different.

But for all it's beauty, it is still pain.

It takes courage to face your guilt.
